To Volunteer, or to Donate? One Volunteer’s Perspective

One of my all-time favorite quotes is by Muhammad Ali. He says, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” You’re probably thinking that I’m crazy, because you know that you really don’t have to pay rent just to be here on Earth. However, we all do need to give back to the world that has given us so much. You can either donate money or donate your time, and both of these simple donations can make an impact on the world.

I recently started volunteering at the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce. I chose to volunteer here, not only for the experience, but to also give back to the community that has given me so much. Many things in life come down to whether you have the time or the money, but volunteering and donating money are equally important. Let’s take a look at the benefits of both of these options that are ways to give back.

There are many benefits of volunteering. For starters, volunteering can be a meaningful experience. Volunteers are able to see and feel the impact of their service and the lasting difference that they are making. Unlike pulling out your checkbook to donate money, volunteering requires you to engage in some type of work. This can help sharpen your skills, and it can often be a relaxing escape from your busy, bustling life. After all, there is nothing more valuable than your time.

Donating money is another way to give back. Many people may realize that they do not have time to volunteer, but giving money is a way that they are able to serve. This donation can help an organization with some of their projects and their finances. Being able to give back to those in need helps you grow and gives you personal satisfaction.

The way you choose to serve is up to you and what fits your lifestyle the best. I hope you feel the fulfillment that comes with serving others and giving back to your community, and I encourage you to go out and find ways that you are able to pay your rent for your place here on Earth through service and giving back.
