Megan’s Picks: Five Favorite Campgrounds

Author: Megan Millang, Receptionist & Events Coordinator

Camping in the Black Hills and Sturgis is one of the more beautiful places around. With so many places to see in the area and numerous campgrounds to choose from, let’s look at some of my personal top picks for campgrounds during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally:

1.The first campground is the Legendary Buffalo Chip. Although they are in the process of making this place its own permanent town and is currently only open for business during the rally, it’s a top stay if you come to Sturgis. Amenities include free showers, gas station, laundry services, mail in service, free pancake breakfast and a general store as well as a camping store for anything that may have left behind. During the rally there are food and beverage venders everywhere, making there know need to leave. Free concerts are included during the rally with any camping or day passes are sold to enjoy one show at a time. Don’t miss out on “Zip the Chip” where guests jump from a 7-story platform and hit speeds up to 30 mph over the chip. With the mission being to annually create the BEST PARTY ANYWHERE by providing the world’s best entertainment in a safe environment that encourages and allows some of this planet’s nicest people to enjoy the sense of God-given freedom and camaraderie that this great country was founded to protect. This is one place that will not disappoint.

2. Creekside Campground, the name says it all, located on Bear Butte Creek and right off highway 79, this campground is close to town but still allows for privacy from people. The campground is referred to as a “sleeping” campground and quiet time starts at 10:00 p.m. Creekside is open year around and have special rates before or after the Sturgis Rally. They also offer tent camping, RV and camper parking with electrical and water hook ups or dray camping, as well as air-conditioned cabins. There is also a convenience store and a nice bathroom and shower facility.

3. Next we have Bear Butte Creek Campground, located about 4 miles outside of Sturgis near Bear Butte, it is one of the oldest campgrounds in Sturgis. There are plenty of shade trees to keep cool during the day, and an old historic bar with outdoor dance floor with music at night. The grounds include 3 shower houses located throughout the 30 acres with room for RVs, campers, and tents, cabins and campers are also for rent. The property also includes a laundry facility, bike wash station, general store and restaurant. Primarily open for rally each year.

4. Ride N Rest, also located on Highway 79, offers a world-famous shower house open 24/7 for convenience. They offer the usual tent and RV/Camper camping, as well as cabins located throughout the grounds. They also offer a rally house that includes 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, full kitchen and living area to really make your rally time feel like home. They also have a shuttle that is offered only to the staying guests and will take you to surrounding locations. The Kitchen is open for breakfast 7 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and dinner is 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. while drinks and food are offered at the bar till 2:00 a.m.

5. Last there is the Sturgis RV Park, conveniently located just blocks from the historic Sturgis Main St this makes for a great stay in town. With lots of space for RVs, campers and tents, Sturgis RV also offers cabins that can sleep up to 6 people as well as a Rally Center that has 2 large flat screens with cable TV, pool table and kitchen. Sunday night potlucks at The Rally Center start at 6:00 p.m. and Silver Sneaker Aerobics is at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays. Picnic tables located at each campsite, dog and bike wash on site, pets are very welcomed, free wireless internet and access to FedEx, UPS and USPS. Shower and laundry facilities are also on site.

These are just a few of the great places to stay in Sturgis! View our full Business Directory for complete list!
